About Anya
“
SHE MAKES HER WORK ACCESSIBLE TO ALL WOMEN
”
Anya Naumovic is an interdisciplinary artist working with text, printbased media and sculpture.
Her work is characterised by a deep introspection into the impactful nature of sexual trauma she suffered. Through her work, she has transformed her experiences into a repository of evidence, filling a void that previously lacked acknowledgement. In doing so, she has opened the door to exploring the ineffable, allowing these complex emotions to be transformed into tangible domestic objects that can be comprehended.
The tactile process of carving linoleum and hand-printing each letter onto her canvas mirrors the intensity and aggression of abuse, a connection further underscored by the bold capital letters she employs. Naumovic's creations are inherently confrontational, compelling viewers to confront societal norms and preconceived notions of gender. By provoking a direct engagement with the person rather than merely a statistic, her work challenges the viewer's perspective.
Naumovic often employs ready-made domestic objects as her canvas, subtly commenting on the intricate politics of gender within the private sphere. The notion of home typically invokes feelings of comfort and security, yet, for the artist, this sanctuary was shattered due to the presence of abuse. Her art delves into the examination and articulation of trauma, transcending the intangible realm of the mind to manifest as a tangible representation.
Ultimately, through the medium of text and print, Naumovic alters the power dynamic, seizing control over the conveyance of her trauma. In this artistic transformation, she reclaims authority over her narrative and empowers the audience to grapple with the complexities of her experience.
